Welfare check in Litchfield leads to discovery of dead man, unconscious woman

LITCHFIELD, NH – State and local authorities are investigating a death apparently due to high levels of carbon monoxide at a home on Moose Hollow Road in Litchfield.

On July 12, 2017 at approximately 6 p.m. Litchfield Police and Fire Departments were requested to check the welfare of individuals residing at the residence. During the course of checking their welfare, police and fire responders discovered a deceased male, and a female who was alive but unresponsive, along with fatal levels of carbon monoxide inside the residence.

The female was transported to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center to receive medical treatment.

The cause of the carbon monoxide release into the residence is still under investigation.

Results of an autopsy were released, along with the identity of the male, Jamie Badeau, 40, of Litchfield. The NH Medical Examiner’s Office has determined the cause of death to be carbon monoxide poisoning, and the manner of death was ruled accidental.

The identity of the female victim has not yet been released.

State Fire Marshal Degnan and Fire Chief Frank Fraitzl would like to remind all New Hampshire citizens of the importance of having working carbon monoxide alarms in your homes and to know the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas this is known as the silent killer. Signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning may include; dull headache, weakness, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, shortness of breath, confusion, blurred vison or loss of consciousness. If you experience any of these symptoms, get to fresh air and call E911 immediately.
