Oct. 14: A Night of Remembrance for domestic violence victims

MANCHESTER, NH – Raychel Carpenter grew up witnessing domestic violence in her own home. At a very young age she lost her mother as a direct result of it. on Oct. 14 she will share what the experience was like from a child’s perspective.

Carpenter will be the keynote speaker at A Night of Remembrance, an evening honoring the lives lost to domestic violence in Greater Manchester over the last decade. The event is sponsored by YWCA New Hampshire and the Greater Manchester Council Against Domestic and Sexual Violence from 6-8 p.m. at YWCA New Hampshire, 72 Concord Street in Manchester.

A Night of Remembrance will include a candlelight vigil and the unveiling of a Memorial Garden that features stones with the names of people in the greater Manchester area who have died as a result of domestic violence over the past 10 years.

The event will also include the release of a report by the Greater Manchester Council Against Domestic and Sexual Violence entitled A Week in the Life of Victims of Domestic and Sexual Violence in the Manchester Area. The report chronicles domestic violence in Manchester during a period in July 2016 from the various viewpoints of the Manchester District Office of the Division of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF), the Hillsborough County Attorney’s Office, the Manchester YWCA, the Manchester Circuit Court, the Manchester Police Department, hospitals, crisis centers, and shelters.

October is Domestic Awareness Month, and events such as A Night of Remembrance draw attention to organizations such as YWCA NH which provide crisis services programming for victims, survivors, and their children of domestic violence and/or sexual assault.
