MANCHESTER, NH – First quarter preliminary crime statistics for “part one” crimes have shown a 17 percent decrease since January 1, 2016.

Since launching the city’s predictive analytics in July of 2015, Chief Nick Willard says the new policing methods are having a positive effect on reduction of certain crimes including murder/non-negligent homicide, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, larceny-theft, and arson.

The basic premise of predictive analytics includes adding more officers to patrol based on data gathered through an analysis of crime “hot spots.” Adding additional patrol officers during certain days and times based on information gathered with the predictive analytics formula has helped to “get in front” of crime, shifting the focus on prevention.

Manchester Police also partnered with New Hampshire State Police in Operation Cyan, which began in July 2015, resulting in the arrest of 124 people, 2,018 motor vehicle stops and 664 motor vehicle summons issued. The successful operation utilized a two-person unit (one Manchester officer and on New Hampshire State Trooper) to work together during premium crime hours as determined through predictive analytics.

“The preliminary first-quarter crime reduction of 17 percent is a direct reflection of the men and women of the Manchester Police Department, who truly have bought into our new policing methodology. The true dedication and hard work exhibited by our officers is the reason we have had a crime reduction in the Queen City,” Willard said in a prepared statement.

Final numbers will be published on the Manchester Police website as soon as they are cleared through the State of New Hampshire.
