MANCHESTER, N.H. – U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-Penn.) was on hand to rally volunteers for presidential candidate Joe Biden at the campaign’s West Brook Street office on Friday afternoon.
The stop was one of several in the state on Friday for Casey, who endorsed Biden in April.
Although Casey has not spent much time in New Hampshire, he believes Biden’s campaign has a strong base in the Granite State and elsewhere in the country, despite perceptions that he may not have the same grassroots energy of some other presidential candidates.
“My sense is there is very grassroots presence here, not just in the degree of support he has, but in terms of his fundraising. I think he’ll have a very strong campaign here,” he said. “I think we’ll see when people are voting who has grassroots support or doesn’t.”
Casey said he had been hearing more from his constituents regarding the hearings into the potential impeachment of President Donald Trump, who he said had been expressing concerns over Trump’s request to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate Biden’s son Hunter in exchange for foreign aid.
For Heather Ledoux of Litchfield, the sense she’s getting from people she’s talking to is that this is just the latest in a long line of scandals coming from the Trump Administration.
Ledoux says she has volunteered on over a dozen phonebanks for the Biden campaign so far, pledging her support shortly after Biden entered the race earlier this year.
“I think people are understanding that one, their vote does count, because the midterms have shown us that and a lot of people are engaged and becoming active with the campaign or with an organization and they’re finding ways to have their voice heard,” she said. “But what I’m also hearing is that people are tired of the division. They’re tired of the non-stop fighting, and they’re tired of the non-stop scandals in the current administration. And even those who may have voted on the GOP ticket the last time around, they’re saying ‘I can’t do this anymore,’ and those are people who will gravitate toward a more moderate Democrat like Joe.”
Biden will be in New Hampshire this week, appearing in Manchester at McIntyre Ski Area on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
