Minimum security inmate AWOL: Left Calumet to visit family, never returned

UPDATE, June 10 2:15 p.m.: Inmate Matthew Michael Gerlach, who walked away from the Calumet Transitional Housing Unit in Manchester on Thursday, June 9, was apprehended Friday, June 10, 2016.  No further details were immediately available.

MANCHESTER, NH —  The NH Department of Corrections reports that an inmate is missing from the Calumet Transitional Housing Unit in Manchester, NH.  Matthew Michael Gerlach, 41, of Manchester was given permission to go on an outing to visit his family on Thursday, June 9, 2016.  He left the facility at 4:45 p.m. and was required to return at 8:45 p.m.  He did not return and was placed on escape status at approximately 9:45 pm.

Inmate Gerlach is described as a white male, 5 foot 9 inches tall, 240 pounds, with strawberry hair and hazel eyes.  He has multiple tattoos on his left and right calves, right arm, right wrist, left arm, and right hand.

He was sentenced in Hillsborough County Superior Court in Manchester to 2 to 7 years for Receiving Stolen Property and Theft by Unauthorized Taking to be served concurrently.  He is also serving a 2 to 5 year sentence for being deemed a Habitual Offender also from Hillsborough County Superior Court in Manchester.  He was given 57 days of time served.  He was admitted to the New Hampshire State Prison on January 26, 2015 and was eligible for parole on September 29, 2016with a maximum release date of November 28, 2019 on the Habitual Offender conviction and November 27, 2021 on the Theft and Stolen Property convictions.

The New Hampshire Department of Corrections Investigations Bureau and the New Hampshire State Police are investigating.  Anyone with information on this inmate’s whereabouts should contact their local law enforcement agency or the New Hampshire State Police.  Escape is a Class-B felony which is punishable by 3 ½ – 7 years in prison
