MANCHESTER, NH – Matt MacKenzie scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give the Manchester Monarchs a 3-2 win over the Adirondack Thunder Jan. 24 to complete the three-game sweep of the weekend series.

The Monarchs (25-12-1-4) outshot the Thunder (25-10-2-2), 35-31.

“It started with some energy as we came back with a couple good shifts in the second that got us rolling,” Head Coach Rich Seeley said. “We started taking care of pucks in the neutral zone and ultimately we found a way to score three.”

The Thunder opened the scoring at 5:40 of the first period, when Dana Fraser netted his 7th goal of the season. Gunnar Hughes won a battle along the right boards to get the puck to Fraser, who then skated into the slot and put the puck past goaltender Doug Carr top-shelf stick side.

The Thunder extended their lead to two with a power-play goal from Michael Kirkpatrick at 9:29 of the first. Patch Alber started the play at the left point and passed the puck to Kirkpatrick as he shifted down in the left circle, putting it top-shelf blocker side.

The Monarchs bounced back with a goal at 19:01 of the second period when Mark Anthoine netted his 3rd tally of the season. Anthoine put away a low rebound glove side off a shot by Joe Diamond.

Austin Block tied the game for the Monarchs with his 3rd goal of the season at 5:17 of the third period. Danick Paquette passed to Block, who skate into the right circle and tried to pass to Troy Power in the slot, before the pass hit a defender at the top of the paint and the puck came back to Block and he fired home the rebound.

The game could not be decided in regulation and headed to overtime when MacKenzie notched his 2nd of the season to give the Monarchs the 3-2 OT victory at 1:41 of the extra frame. MacKenzie shot the puck from the right circle past Simpson for the game-winner.

The Monarchs travel to Orlando for three games against the Solar Bears Jan. 27-31 and return to the Verizon Wireless Arena on Feb. 6 (7 p.m.) for Pink in the Rink against the Elmira Jackals.
