MANCHESTER, NH – Harvard Pilgrim Health Care today announced the recipients of its $40,000 Opioid Misuse Prevention, Recovery and Treatment Grants program.  The program, funded by the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation and in its 2nd year, is providing grants to four New Hampshire nonprofits that serve residents dealing with opioid addiction with evidence-based prevention, treatment or recovery services.

The grant recipients are:

  • Amoskeag Health, Manchester ($10,000)

The Opioid Misuse Prevention Grant will enable Amoskeag Health (formerly Manchester Community Health Center) to establish an ongoing 12-step, 90-minute group therapy and yoga program for their patients striving for recovery from substance use disorders.  The first 45 minutes would be spent in traditional group therapy, followed by 45 minutes of yoga, meditation and breathing exercises.

The grant will be used to provide Emergency Financial Assistance for individuals in recovery including job search supports such as clothing for interviews, transportation, deposits to secure housing, and more.  Emergency financial assistance can be the difference between success and reentry into a treatment program as clients can easily return to substance misuse when life’s challenges arise. Easterseals will provide wrap-around, holistic supports and services, in addition to emergency financial assistance for individuals in recovery.

  • Reality Check Recovery Coach Program, Jaffrey ($10,000)

This grant will enable Reality Check, a nonprofit prevention, treatment, recovery services and education provider, to partner with the Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough to develop a Recovery Coach Emergency Department (ED) Program.  When patients are brought to the ED for an overdose, a Recovery Coach will offer help to get into treatment, and receive ongoing coaching and support to prevent relapse and ensure recovery. Funds will also be used to pay for a Master’s Level Alcohol & Drug Counselor training to provide Recovery Coach supervision and individual counseling.

The grant will enable Safe Harbor to continue its Sober Parenting Journey programs in spring and summer of 2020.  This program is a curriculum-based, evidence-supported series of classes supporting parents seeking to start treatment or maintain recovery.  The program supports mothers, fathers, and caregivers who are raising children of all ages. The objective of the program is to enhance remission of active substance and alcohol use disorder, and the creation of an environment that promotes love, nurturing, protection and learning. Each program is a series of 14 two-hour sessions covering emotional healthy, coping skills, goal making, and accountability.

“As the drug crisis in New Hampshire continues to have a significant impact on communities across the state, we are proud to support four of the many programs doing exceptional work to help individuals in prevention, treatment and recovery,” said William Brewster, M.D., Vice President of New Hampshire Regional Market at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care.  “This is our second year offering this grants program and we are inspired by the organizations providing hope and support to families facing addiction.”
