Woman thwarts burglar with pepper spray

MANCHESTER, NH – A city man who allegedly broke into a Chestnut Street apartment was thwarted by a resident armed pepper spray.

On June 18 at approximately 9 a.m. Officer Beau Bernard was dispatched to 657 Chestnut St. on June 18, for a burglary in progress. The assailant, later identified as Cleon Hoggard, 31, of Manchester, allegedly broke into the apartment and assaulted the 29-year-old resident, which prompted a brief struggle. Hoggard ceased the assault and fled the apartment after the victim’s 26-year-old girlfriend sprayed him with pepper spray.

Police took a report including a description of Hoggard as a shirtless man carrying a backpack and covered in pepper spray. The victim did not sustain any injuries as a result of the incident and it is unknown what prompted the attack on the homeowner.

Additional officers located and arrested Hoggard near 610 Pine St. minutes after he fled the Chestnut Street apartment. Hoggard, who was shirtless and covered in pepper spray, was also carrying a backpack when located by Officer Thomas Dubois and Ryan Brandreth.

Hoggard appeared to be under the influence of drugs when he was taken into custody. He was charged with burglary and placed on a 72-hour hold for probation/parole. He was scheduled to appear in Hillsborough County Superior Court-North on June 19, 2018.
