CONCORD, NH – Gov. Maggie Hassan capped off the second annual What’s So Cool About Manufacturing? video contest earlier this month by announcing the winners via video. The contest pairs middle school students with their local manufacturers for a look at New Hampshire’s largest industry.

The winning entry was submitted by students at the North Hampton School, who worked with Foss Manufacturing to give their take on advanced manufacturing. Kingswood Regional Middle School students, working with Calico Graphics in Wolfeboro, earned second place and Londonderry Middle Schools, collaborating with Stonyfield Organics, placed third. The schools will receive $1,000, $500 and $250 respectively, provided through sponsorships by Hypertherm, BAE Systems and Velcro USA.

“This year, students from 10 schools around the state produced 11 videos and the results – once again – are impressive, as students answered this challenge with videos that are informative, creative … and very cool,” said Hassan in her announcement. “To continue being innovative and competitive, our manufacturers need to know that today’s students are prepared to succeed in tomorrow’s workforce. This contest helps our students better understand that there will be exciting career opportunities in manufacturing for them here in New Hampshire when they graduate in a few short years.”

The contest is sponsored by the Division of Economic Development and the New Hampshire Manufacturing Extension Partnership. Participating schools and manufacturers were Gorham Middle Afterschool Program and Alpine Manufacturing; Groveton Middle School and Pak 2000; Kearsarge Regional Middle School and Labsphere and Hypertherm; Kingswood Regional Middle School and Calico Graphics; Lancaster Middle School and Northwoods Manufacturing; Londonderry Middle School and Stonyfield Organics; Merrimack Middle School and Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics; North Hampton School and Foss Manufacturing; Sanborn Regional Middle School and Seabrook International, and South Meadow School and Sarah’s Hatbox.

“New Hampshire manufacturers produce components and equipment that support research from the depths of the ocean to new frontiers of space exploration,” said Jeffrey Rose, commissioner of the Department of Resources and Economic Development. “We need to make sure they have the skilled workforce to keep them competitive not just today, but also for tomorrow. The What’s So Cool About Manufacturing? video contest provides a great introduction to student about the exciting career opportunities in the state’s largest sector.”

Establishing a pipeline of talent is important to the state’s manufacturers, said Zenagui Brahim, president of NHMEP.

“Our manufacturers are eager to connect with their future workers, so this contest is enables them to meet some of the students who may well be their future innovators,” he said.

The NH DRED is also bringing back a webinar series for 2016, the next one scheduled for March 17. From the comfort of your office, you can learn about the topic Expanding Overseas Sales through E-Commerce. Presenters include representatives from eBay, who will talk about increasing international business sales via e-commerce; growing marketplaces; export compliance and economic development opportunities.

E-commerce and social media have become powerful tools that companies of all sizes are using to expand their business. This webinar will have particular appeal to our small businesses, who will learn about the platform. Among the questions we’ll be asking:

  • What is different about shipping B2C instead of B2B?
  • What is the benefit of shipping to international customers?
  • What documentation does the U.S. seller have to provide for the international shipment to be processed?

Space is available; you can register here.
