MANCHESTER, NH – Crews planned to work through the night to fix a 12-inch water main break under Beech Street at the corner of Merrill Street. The road started to collapse sometime after 7 p.m. on Aug. 10 as hundreds of thousands gallons of water gushed from the ground. Manchester Waterworks called in emergency personnel who were able to shut the flow off within about an hour.

Businesses in the area are cut off from water, including a restaurant, 7-Eleven, a Laundromat, and bowling alley. Also. residents on Beech Street were without water.

Streets are closed in the area and police are diverting traffic around the break.

The city is currently working on replacing aging underground pipes as part of a 3o-year Combined Sewer Overflow project. However, due to the age and deteriorating condition of some of the pipes, sinkholes can happen before the pipes are replaced.
