NORFOLK, Va.  – The Manchester Monarchs came close to their first shutout of the 2018-’19 campaign on Wednesday night, defeating the Norfolk Admirals, 5-1.

Manchester took three goals in the first period alone, including a lucky rebound opportunity that Nic Pierog put in the back of the net with just one second before the intermission.

Cory Ward scored two goals for the Monarchs, joining Pierog on the score sheet along with Joe Pendenza and Joe Sullivan.

Ben Duffy did slide the puck between the legs of Monarchs netminder Chris Driedger, the lone mistake in a 33-save night upon his return from Springfield (AHL).

Ward also added an assist and Pavel Jenys added a pair of helpers in his first game after being sent on assignment from Ontario (AHL).

The Monarchs return to action Friday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m, taking on Norfolk again for the second game in a three-game road set.
