PORTLAND, ME – Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has been the talk of the Eastern League, so it’s understandable that he is the Eastern League Player of the Month for May.
The Eastern League made that announcement on Monday, with Guerrero leading the league in batting average, slugging percentage, RBI and doubles.
During the month of May, he had a .438 average with nine home runs, 28 RBIs, 29 runs, a .480 on-base percentage and a .768 slugging percentage. Those nine home runs were a single-month team record, also setting the single-month team record for hits with 49 and just missing Travis Snider’s single-month RBI record of 30 RBI, set in May of 2008.
Ranked No. 1 among minor league prospects by Baseball America, Guerrero had hits in 26 of 29 May games, reaching base in all but two of his games so far this season.
He’s currently the youngest player in Double-A and just the second Fisher Cat ever to win the Eastern League’s Player of the Month honor, following Gustavo Chacin in 2004.
