Unprecedented Penmen season ends in penalty shootout

It’s Sunday, Nov. 17, 2019. Here’s what’s been going on lately in Southern New Hampshire University sports.

Field Hockey

The Penmen saw their season come to an end in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament on Sunday, falling 3-1 in a penalty shootout to Kutztown University.

SNHU outshot Kutztown 13-4 during the first eighty minutes of the contest.

Freshman Lisa Hagel (Driehuis, The Netherlands) had the lone SNHU shootout goal.

The Penmen close out their most successful season in program history with a record of 17-5. This year also set a program record for goals with 68, topping the previous record of 47 in 2017.

Men’s Ice Hockey

There were plenty of goals on Saturday as the Penmen defeated Post, 10-4.

Sophomore Jake Cox (Columbus, Ga.) and freshman James Nash (Hampton, N.H.) each scored twice, with additional goals from freshman George Thurston (Plymouth, Mass.), sophomore Max Kent (Sandwich, Mass.), sophomore Joe Fiorino (Willow Grove, Pa.), sophomore Andy Somerville (Medford, Mass.), sophomore Travis Quigley (North Babylon, N.Y.) and senior D.J. Goldstein (Wareham, Mass.).

The ten goals were the most scored for the Penmen since Head Coach Sean Walsh took over the program in 2017.  SNHU won 9-3 over Post on February 2, 2018.

SNHU now leads the All-time Series with Post 8-2.  The Eagles are competing as a member of the Northeast-10 for the first time this season.

The Penmen outshot the Eagles 45-31 for the contest.  SNHU went 3-for-7 on the power-play to improve the season total to 12 goals on 36 tries this season.

SNHU (5-1-0, 3-0-0 Northeast-10) continues its six-game road stretch when they play at Saint Anselm College on Friday, November 22 at 7:00 p.m.

Women’s Volleyball

The Penmen saw a 3-2 loss to American International College on Saturday.

Senior Baylee Lippincott (Phoenix, Ariz.) had a team-best 12 kills. Sophomore Ramona Fontaine (Chelsea, Mass.) matched her career-high of 10 kills, adding five blocks.

After winning eight of 10, including six of seven and three straight, Southern New Hampshire has now dropped three-in-a-row.
