MANCHESTER, NH – A fire inside a manufacturing plant on Abby Road required assistance from Manchester Fire Department’s haz-mat team Wednesday morning.

At about 7:19 a.m. on Feb. 28 an alarm came in from Millennium Precision Manufacturing, 234 Abby Road. Crews learned there was a fire in a bin containing titanium shavings and requested additional units, including the haz-mat team, and two ambulances.
Workers attempted to extinguish the fire before MFD arrived. The workers used water which creates a volatile reaction and instability with the titanium. The entire building, including the office area, became “charged with smoke” according to Manchester Fire District Chief James Michael. One worker began experiencing chest pain and was rushed to the Elliot Hospital.
After MFD extinguished the fire they evacuated smoke from the building. City fire Investigators were requested to the scene to investigate the cause and safety protocol of the response from workers.
