According to Julie Chudow, public relations manager for the Cooking Channel, Sugar Showdown is a 13-episode competition series hosted by Josh Elkin. Three expert bakers enter the Sugar Showdown studio and compete in episodes that feature cakes, pies, cupcakes or donuts. First, the competitors must make their best dessert incorporating one mystery ingredient. After three judges eliminate one competitor, the remaining finalists must make creations based on a theme. Only one baker will be crowned the champion, winning bragging rights and $10,000.

Queen City Cupcakes opened on Elm Street in 2011 and has customers immediately lining up and out the door daily. This small, family run business bakes daily, and closes shop when they run out of cupcakes. In just four years, Queen City Cupcakes has become an integral part of downtown Manchester.

In the premiere episode, “Alien Cupcakes,” the bakers first compete in a speedy elimination round with mayonnaise as the mystery ingredient. The last two bakers standing compete for $10,000 in an alien-themed cupcake showdown. Judges Zane Caplansky, Johnny Iuzzini and Sherry Yard decide who takes home the grand prize.
