Sweeping up: Newman Double Lifts Fisher Cats To 4-1 win over Trenton

MANCHESTER, NH – Matt Newman ripped a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a tie and the Fisher Cats went on to complete a three-game sweep of Trenton with a 4-1 win April 29 at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

In the decisive frame, Jake Fox led off with a double and Jorge Flores came on to pinch run. KC Hobson singled ahead of Newman’s double off losing pitcher Andury Acevedo (0-1). Jack Murphy doubled Newman home for New Hampshire (12-9) to make it 4-1.

Fisher Cats pitchers limited Trenton to just two hits in the game. Starter John Anderson allowed one run on one hit over seven innings. He walked three and struck out five. Austin Bibens-Dirkx (WP: 1-0) worked a scoreless eighth to pick up the win. Blake McFarland worked around a single in the ninth for his second save.

Trenton (10-10) scored its run in the top of the first inning. Jose Pirela doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Judge 1-0.

Ryan Schimpf homered for the Fisher Cats in the bottom of the second inning to make it 1-1. It was his fourth of the season, and 50th longball in a New Hampshire uniform.

Trenton starter Luis Severino allowed one run on six hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out six but did not figure in the decision.

New Hampshire finished the home stand with Binghamton and Trenton with a 6-1 record and the club stands at 11-3 at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

After the first scheduled off day of the season, the Fisher Cats open a six-game roadtrip in Binghamtonon Friday night. LHP Matt Boyd (1-1, 1.31) starts the opener against Mets RHP Luis Cessa (1-1, 2.25). Coverage with Ben Gellman begins at 6:45 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and at www.nhfishercats.com.
