MANCHESTER, NH – The season’s first snowfall brought the usual mayhem to highways, as Manchester Fire Department crews responded to multiple calls throughout the city and along the Interstate, some of which caused personal injury, according to fire officials.

One accident on I-93 south involved three vehicles and one coach bus. The occupants of the vehicles sustained non-life threatening injuries and the 12 occupants of the coach bus had to be extricated with the Jaws of Life, as the accident caused damage to the door. No one on the bus was injured.

In another accident on the I-293 ramp north from I-93 south there were several accidents involving a total of seven vehicles, some sustaining minor injuries. While fire crews were attending to the accident scene a city fire truck was struck by two separate vehicles in a short period of time. Firefighters working alongside the highway narrowly escaped injury when these two vehicles came into contact with the fire truck.

District Fire Chief Michael Gamache reminds all motorists to follow recommended procedure when driving in winter conditions, which includes reducing speed, allowing more time to stop at intersections, keeping windshields and vehicle roof clear of snow, and moving to the passing lane or providing a wide berth whenever they encounter emergency vehicles in service on roadways.
