The New Hampshire Fisher Cats could muster just two hits off the Portland Sea Dogs on Monday night, falling in the first game of their series at Hadlock Field, 5-1.

After Tim Lopes hit a line drive single in the second, the Sea Dogs pitching staff didn’t allow another hit until a Jonathan Davis triple in the eighth.

Davis came home one at-bat later to squelch the shutout, but that would be all when it came to New Hampshire’s offense on the night, excluding five scattered walks and two batters hit by a pitch by winning pitcher Trey Ball (2-6).

Ball went six innings, two more than losing pitcher Fernando Rios (3-6). Rios gave up four hits and three runs, striking out seven Sea Dogs.

Danny Mars and Chad De La Guerra combined for five of Portland’s nine hits and four of their runs. The other run came from Henry Urrutia, who also contributed two RBIs. Jeremy Barfield also ended the day with two RBIs.

New Hampshire (31-43) remains in the Eastern League Eastern Division cellar, 1.5 games behind Hartford and 3 games behind Portland. They’re tied for the worst record in the league with Richmond.

Game Two begins at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, with New Hampshire’s Shane Dawson (1-7, 6.16 ERA) facing Portland’s Travis Lakins (0-4, 6.66 ERA).
