Saint Anselm seals regular season field hockey title

Saturday was a busy day in the world of Saint Anselm sports. Here’s a recap from each game.

Field Hockey

The fourth-ranked Hawks narrowly missed out on a perfect regular season, but did end with a regular season conference championship, defeating Saint Thomas Aquinas, 6-0.

Every single one of Saint Anselm’s wins came via shutout this season, with junior Julia Hand (Reading, Mass.) stopping four shots to finish the regular season with just four goals allowed in 17 contests.

Senior Hannah Friend (North Easton, Mass.) put up two goals an assist for Saint Anselm, the Hawks also got goals from senior Michelle Lemelin (Windham, Maine), senior Emma Bartle (Acton, Mass.), freshman Maeve Murphy (Scituate, Mass.) and junior Hannah Potter (Harwichport, Mass.).

The win was the 100th at Saint Anselm for head coach Carolyn King-Robitaille.

Women’s Ice Hockey

The Hawks took revenge against Franklin Pierce, winning the second half of a home-and-home series with a 2-1 overtime win.

Sopohmore Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) equalized the game midway through the third period on a power play goal, the 31st of her career. Senior Amanda Conger (Swanton, Vt.) provided the game-winner 4:09 into the overtime period during the last of Franklin Pierce’s seven power plays on the day.

Saint Anselm (3-2-0, 3-1-0 Northeast Women’s Hockey Association) next face Salem State on Tuesday, Nov. 5 (7 p.m.)

Men’s Ice Hockey

Following the women’s game, took the ice at Sullivan Arena and earned a 4-2 victory over Worcester State.

Neither team found the back of the net in the first period, but the Hawks obtained second period goals from senior Ryan Spillane (Franklin, Mass.) and freshman Chris Lemay (Salem, N.H.).

Lemay added another goal in the third period and freshman Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.) provided the contest’s final score.

Saint Anselm is now 1-1 on the year, they next face Babson on Friday, Nov. 8 (7 p.m.)

Women’s Volleyball

Defending Northeast-10 champion Southern Connecticut State University came into Soutenburgh Gymnasium, but left with a loss as Saint Anselm topped them in four sets.

Senior Catie McCarthy (Warrenton, Va.) is now third all-time in kills for the Hawks, with her 16 on Saturday putting her at 1,053 overall. She’s 34 kills away from second place, held by Erica Johnson ’01.

The Hawks (17-8, 7-2 Northeast-10) hit the road for the final time this season with contests against Saint Rose and LeMoyne on Friday, Nov. 8 and Saturday, Nov. 9, respectively.

Women’s Basketball

Also at Stoughtenburgh Gymnasium, Saint Anselm earned a 72-51 exhibition victory against Bishop’s University.

The Hawks started on a 10-0 run and didn’t look back, growing their lead to a high of 23 points.

Senior Shannon Ryan (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) finished with 29 points and 18 rebounds. Junior Peyton Steinman (Pittsfield, Mass.) had 18 points.

The regular season begins on Saturday, Nov. 9 against Bloomfield.

Men’s Basketball

The men also defeated Bishop’s at home in exhibition play, 91-63.

Echoing the women’s contest, Saint Anselm opened with a 17-3 run and held a lead as high as 43 points.

Freshman Tyler Arbuckle (Bristol, Conn.) had 26 points and junior Chris Paul (Highland Mills, N.Y.) had 25 points.

The Hawks face Concordia (N.Y.) on Friday, Nov. 8 (5 p.m.) in the Bentley University Tournament.

Football

The Hawks came close to continuing their winning streak, but fell 41-35 to Bentley.

Senior quarterback Eric Fairweather (Londonderry, N.H.) had three rushing touchdowns for Saint Anselm, the fourth time he has done that in his career. He is now just the fourth Saint Anselm football player with 10 rushing touchdowns in a season.

Fairweather also had 202 passing yards, completing 16-of-32 passes with a touchdown to senior Shawn Donovan (Abington, Mass.) The Hawks other score came from freshman Ryan Raybuck (Flower Mound, Texas), who recovered the ball after a blocked field goal attempt, bringing it back 69 yards for a touchdown.

The Hawks (3-6, 3-3 Northeast-10) face American International on the road next Saturday.

Women’s Soccer

Saint Anselm could not find a goal as Stonehill sent the Hawks home with a 4-0 defeat.

Junior goalkeeper Payton Wildrick (Dartmouth, Mass.) had two saves and sophomore Mackenzie O’Neill (Lynnfield, Mass.) had another save in relief of Wildrick during the game’s final 13 minutes.

Although they couldn’t register a goal, the Hawks actually put more shots on goal than the Skyhawks (8-7) and had just one fewer shot in total.

Saint Anselm (7-3-6, 4-3-5 Northeast-10) has one regular season game left, facing Bentley at home on Tuesday, Nov. 5

The Hawks are in a tie for seventh place in the conference with the top eight teams advancing to the Northeast-10 Championship Tournament.
