Saint Anselm gets hockey wins on and off the ice

Here’s a recap of what happened on Saturday in the world of Saint Anselm College sports.

Football

After an 0-5 start, the Hawks have now won three in a row, defeating Southern Connecticut State, 25-24.

Saint Anselm freshman Sulton Woolbright Jr. (Temple Hills, Md.) helped seal the victory, punching the ball loose during a Southern Connecticut State drive in the contest’s last minute.

Hawks senior quarterback Eric Fairweather (Londonderry, N.H.) finished 24-for-43 on the day, throwing for 347 yards. He also had three passing touchdowns and a running touchdown, tying him with Yianna Gavalas ’17 for the program record of 67.

The Hawks head to Bentley next Saturday at 2 p.m.

Field Hockey

The Hawks had a slightly easier time against Southern Connecticut State in field hockey, scoring a 5-0 shutout.

Freshman Ericka Meissner had two goals, with the other goals coming from sophomore Carly LaCasse (Sagamore Beach, Mass.), senior Michelle Lemelin (Windham, Maine), and freshman (Scituate, Mass.)

Southern Connecticut State managed just one shot on goal and the Hawks had 12 of the game’s 13 penalty corners.

Saint Anselm (14-2, 11-1 Northeast-10) heads to Franklin Pierce on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 4 p.m. The Hawks will honor their graduating senior student-athletes on Saturday, Nov. 2, rounding out the regular season with Senior Day at home with a 1 p.m. game start time.

Women’s Soccer

Saint Anselm couldn’t defeat Southern Connecticut State in a third sport, drawing 1-1 on the soccer pitch.

The Hawks’ only goal came from an own goal surrendered by the Owls in the 33rd minute.

The Hawks (8-5-2, 5-3-2 Northeast-10) look ahead to Wednesday, Oct. 30 as they travel to cross-town rival Southern N.H. for a 5 p.m. matchup with the Penmen.

Men’s Soccer

The men couldn’t a goal of any kind, falling 2-0 to second-ranked Adelphi.

Saint Anselm had just two shots on goal, with senior goalkeeper Jacob Rostkowski recording 10 saves.

The Hawks (6-8-0, 2-8-0 Northeast-10) will travel to their Queen City rival Southern New Hampshire on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m.

Women’s Ice Hockey

The Hawks completed a regular season sweep of Post with a 3-2 victory at home.

Senior Jamie Gottwald (Easton, Mass.) had a shorthanded goal in addition to goals from junior Madison Sprague (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and senior Kaley Campbell (Colchester, Vt.)

The Hawks (4-2-0, 4-2-0 NEWHA) now begin a home-and-home with Franklin Pierce on Nov. 1 and 2.

Men’s Ice Hockey

Senior Sean Verrier (Reading, Mass.) had a shorthanded goal that proved to be the Hawks’ only score in a 4-1 exhibition loss to New England College.

The Hawks officially start their 51st season as a varsity program on Friday, Nov. 1 as they host Lebanon Valley at 7 p.m.
