MANCHESTER, NH – Kelley Stelling Contemporary presents a special two-night pop-up at To Share Brewing at 720 Union St. in Manchester featuring the art of Shaina Gates. Earlier this year Gates painted a contemporary mural on the exterior of the space, now it’s your chance to see her works on paper and canvas.
Pop-up dates: Friday, December 14 and 15, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
To Share is Manchester’s newest brewery and right next door to the pop-up. To Share will host their grand opening on Saturday, December 15 – so stop by for some art and grab a beer on the way out!
Shaina Gates lives and works in Exeter. She has shown her work in New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, throughout New Hampshire, and the Cape Cod Museum of Art. Her hyper-realist pieces remind the viewer of trompe l’œil (“deceive the eye”) style painting, where she minutely details each crease and fold of a crumpled piece of paper. For this pop-up solo exhibition, several large scale graphite drawings depict the carefully rendered topography of the paper surface. Also included are several highly realistic watercolor paintings, which present the unfolded paper with areas of geometric color. For her mural on 720 Union St., Gates has abstracted this technique to create a graphic map of the colored areas. The interconnected shapes, which wrap around the outside of the building, are derived from a crumpled paper model of the structure.
Kelley Stelling Contemporary is a gallery dedicated to the presentation of works by emerging and mid-career artists. Based in downtown Manchester, the Gallery provides a much needed venue for an underserved audience. As part of downtown’s revival, we complement established institutions such as the Currier Museum of Art and the NH Institute of Art to reveal to residents and visitors the rich cultural offerings of Manchester.
