MANCHESTER, NH – Rifat Syla, 24, of Manchester, was arrested following an incident Dec. 5 outside a local bar during which he allegedly assaulted a police officer on safety detail and continued scuffling with officers who arrived to assist.

According to a police narrative, Officer Casey Finn was working a detail at Whiskey 20, 20 Old Granite St., on Saturday at approximately 12:50 a.m. when Syla became involved in an argument with several patrons, so he was asked to leave the premises.

Officer Finn escorted Syla toward the front door, but Syla refused to leave and turned toward Officer Finn and allegedly grabbed his shirt and attempted to push him. Officer Finn was able to grab both of Syla’s hands as he started to pull away from him. He advised Syla that he was under arrest for simple assault. Syla refused to comply and pulled his hand away from Officer Finn, attempting to push him for a second time. Syla’s actions caused both he and the officer to fall on the ground.

Syla allegedly attempted to strike Officer Finn in the face as they struggled on the ground. Officer Ryan Hardy and a New Hampshire State Trooper arrived to assist and began struggling with Syla. The trooper deployed his taser as the two Manchester officers continued to struggle with Syla, who was eventually arrested and charged with simple assault, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest/detention.

He was released on $1,500 personal recognizance bail, and is set to appear in the 9th Circuit Court-Manchester on January 8, 2015. There were no reported injuries as a result of the arrest.
