We thank the YMCA Allard Center for the use of their pool on May 19 for testing to make sure we have the best lifeguards possible. If you are interested in becoming a lifeguard, please contact us ASAP. Fun in the Sun is back! Fun in the Sun is the city’s six-week summer camp located at Livingston Park, JFK Coliseum, and Piscataquog River Park. Registration will be at 8 a.m. July 6 at the site you want your child to attend. This is for children ages 6-12 years old and they must be a Manchester resident to register. The first day of camp is July 10 and it runs through August 17. For more information contact ebukowski@manchesternh.gov

The Rock On Foundation is partnering with us to start the Sam Carey Outdoor Basketball League at the Sheridan Emmett courts this summer. Registrations will be distributed through the schools soon. Coaches, referees and scorekeepers will be needed for the games to be held on Saturdays at the Sheridan-Emmett Courts from July 1—mid-August.

WALK FOR YOUR HEALTH IS ON ITS WAY!

Walk for your Health is off to a great start. We have had a great turnout for our first six walks. Our collaboration with AARP has been invaluable. They will have a display at Pine Grove Cemetery on June 2 where they will be giving away water and granola bars. If you want more information contact ebukowski@manchesternh.gov

FOOTBALL FOR YOU

The NE Patriots Alumni were in town April 30 and 86 children participated in their free one day clinic. It was above and beyond the sky for some of the kids who participated. The players from Central High School and the youth coaches who assisted the Patriots at each station all said they had a great day too. Patriots Alumni President Pete Brock presented a $1000 check to Manchester that will be used to buy sports equipment for the Fun In The Sun Program.

PARKS AND REC ON THE MOVE!

Don Pinard represented Manchester at the Parks & Recreation Summit in St. Augustine, FL, where directors from across the country met to discuss current challenges facing municipalities’ green spaces and recreation. Derryfield Country Club’s maintenance staff attended the annual Turf Conference and learned about new technology in the science of moisture control and other topics. Parks, Recreation & Cemeteries was also center of attention for the Manchester Rotary where Mr. Pinard gave a presentation with an overview of the division and he outlined current and future projects.

YOUTH CENTER SCHEDULE –MAY

The Regis Lemaire Youth Center at 275 Maple St. will be open from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday and closed on Mondays and Thursdays. As always, children ages 9-15 are welcome. The center will be closed May 29 in observation of Memorial Day.

Vets Park WWIIJPG VETERAN’S PARK WORLD WAR II MONUMENT

The monument and surrounding area in Veteran’s Park will be improved in the coming month. We will be adding lighting, plantings and new posts/chains.

VETERANS SECTION AT PINE GROVE

The Veterans section of Pine Grove Cemetery is receiving some needed attention, the kind deserving of those who have sacrificed so much for our country. The renovations have started and include a new walkway done with pavers donated by Unilock. The prep work for the walkway and circle can be in the photos. We will be putting in flagpoles and flags for each of the branches of military service as well. We take great pride in this particular project to shine the spotlight on our veterans.

Veterans Park Tensile Structure and StageTHE TENT IS UP!

The monstrous job of putting up the tent in Veteran’s Park is completed for another year. If you look closely though, you will notice the yellow is a little brighter, the tent is a little cleaner, and your parks staff is a little more tired than usual. That’s because the fabric is brand new. It was not an easy install, but the extended Parks staff and Cote Rigging Company of Goffstown worked tirelessly for two days to get the new tent in place. Let summer begin!
