LONDONDERRY, NH — Route 28 will remain closed for several hours after an accident involving an overturned tanker truck carrying gasoline and diesel fuel early Wednesday morning.

The accident happened at approximately 5:15 a.m. when the tanker, operated by P&H Transportation out of North Haverhill, went off the road and rolled over on its side, taking down a pole in its path along with several transformers. The crash caused more than 2,000 Eversource customers in Londonderry and Manchester to lose power.

A "check dam" (earth berm and absorbant socks) were built by a NH DOT District 5 road crew to help contain up to 3,000 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled from a tractor trailer rollover.

Londonderry Fire Department Battalion Chief James Roger said the situation posed a safety hazard and crews immediately used foam spray to neutralize the spill. A NH DOT road maintenance crew created a berm using dirt and absorbent “socks” to help contain and absorb the estimated 2,500- 3,000 gallons of fuel.

Route 28 was expected to remain closed between Page and Sanborn roads for several hours.

The truck driver was not injured. Power to Eversource customers was restored by 6 a.m., according to a company spokesperson.

The accident remains under investigation by Londonderry Police and NH State Police.
