MANCHESTER, NH — A fire at The Lofts at Mill West Thursday was caused by “smoking material” that was improperly disposed of, igniting a fire in a trash can, according to fire officials.

Crews responded to a fire alarm just before 7 p.m. at the renovated mill building, 195 McGregor St. and found smoke coming from apartment 346. Smoke was also beginning to fill the corridors where people were self-evacuating. Firefighters entered the unoccupied apartment and discovered a fire in the trash receptacle, which the automatic sprinkler system held in check until the fire crews extinguished the remaining flames.

The resident of the apartment was not home at the time, but was in another section of the building. Fire officials estimate the damage to be $7,500.

Initial investigation indicated the cause of the fire was unintentional due to the careless disposal of smoking materials.
