MANCHESTER, NH – A Northwood teen faces multiple charges after giving police a false story and fake name, and then resisting arrest and trying to grab a police officer’s gun early Saturday morning.

On May 6, 2017 at approximately 12:22 a.m. Officer Mark Aquino stopped a vehicle for a red light violation near the intersection of Auburn and Pine streets. He spoke with the operator, later be identified as Dana Hathaway, 19, of 1 Pheasant Lane, Northwood. Hathaway stated he was being taught to drive by the owner of the vehicle (a 19-year-old female) who was a passenger, and was not charged.

Hathaway gave Officer Aquino a false name and said he did not have a license. While investigating the information provided by Hathaway, Sgt. Brian Caldwell arrived to back up Officer Aquino. Officer Aquino learned from the passenger that the name Hathaway provided was false. While speaking with Hathaway at the rear of the vehicle he began to tense up when confronted with his real name.

Sgt. Caldwell started to pat Hathaway down for safety reasons when Hathaway pulled away. He then spun back towards Sergeant Caldwell and grabbed for his gun. While doing this he pulled on Sergeant Caldwell’s gun with one hand and held off Sergeant Caldwell’s arm with the other. He was brought to the ground and forcibly handcuffed.

It was learned shortly after he was taken into custody that Hathaway had multiple outstanding warrants: an Electronic Bench Warrant for four counts of simple assault domestic; one count of violation of protective order; and one count criminal mischief. He had an active warrant from NH State Police for assault and a warrant from Sullivan County for one count of criminal threatening with a deadly weapon.

Hathaway is currently on probation and a hold was placed on him. His charges from the Saturday morning incident are one count each of disobeying a police officer; resisting arrest/detention; and attempting to take a firearm from a police officer; and a 72-hour probation hold.

Hathaway was not admitted to bail and will be arraigned at 9th Circuit Court Manchester on Monday 8, 2017.
