DUBOIS, PA –  After a good night’s sleep Sunday was the official start of the Small College World Series here in DuBois, PA.

The day included a practice on the Heindl Memorial Field (which is the softball game field), the USCAA banquet, a parade of teams from the softball field to the Showers Field (which is the baseball field), home run derby for both baseball and softball teams, and a 10-minute fireworks show to cap off the night.

We all had breakfast at the hotel from 7-8:15 a.m. We headed off to the field for practice with rain in the area that might affect us, so we got there early to have more time.

When we arrived, all of us were in awe of how state-of-the-art the facility is.

Head Coach Kerry Finnigan said this about the facility: “It is the finest softball complex I have seen in my career of softball, and it rivals major NCAA Division 1 softball facilities.”

After practice, we went back to the hotel to change for the USCAA banquet at the DuBois Country Club. On the menu was grilled chicken with a roasted red pepper sauce, honey glazed ham, macaroni & cheese, garlic & herb mashed potatoes, and steamed zucchini.

We won five awards at the banquet. Danyel McNicholas and Tori Lemay got 1st team All-American honors, while Briana Connolly and Masha Lange got 2nd team honors, and Head Coach Kerry Finnigan won USCAA Softball Coach of the year.

After that, we went back to the hotel to change again to get ready for the rest of the day’s events. We went back to the field so Coach Finnigan could attend the coaches meeting for the week. Then they lined us by seed (Softball #10-1 and then Baseball #10-1) for the parade over to Showers Field for the home run derby and fireworks show.

Masha Lange represented us in the home run derby. She won the entire thing for softball’s side it by hitting a combined 40 home runs in three rounds of action.

The baseball home-run derby was after that. The 10-minute fireworks show was amazing to end the night.
