NH secures first win of 2017, 8-3 over Ponies, behind Guerrero, Rios, and Alfor

Alford’s hot start continues with three more singles, now batting 7-for-10 this year.

MANCHESTER, NH – Emilio Guerrero drove in three runs and Francisco Rios won his Double-A debut as the Fisher Cats topped Binghamton 8-3 on Sunday afternoon at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

New Hampshire (1-2) salvaged the final game of the series after dropping the season-opening  doubleheader to the Rumble Ponies (2-1) on Saturday. The Fisher Cats sent eight men to the plate in a four-run first inning for a 4-0 lead. Richard Urena walked, Anthony Alford (3-for-5) singled and Ryan McBroom doubled them both home. After Harold Ramirez singled, Guerrero singled in a run and another run scored on a throwing error on the play.

Reese McGuire, New Hampshire’s catcher, blasted a solo home run for the Fisher Cats in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it 5-0. Jonathan Diaz added a solo blast in the bottom of the sixth inning. Guerrero delivered a two-run single in the last of the seventh to put New Hampshire up 8-1.

New Hampshire starter Rios (1-0) allowed a run on four hits in his five innings. Binghamton scored a run in the top of the fifth inning. J. C. Rodriguez, singled, moved to third on a single by Luis Guillorme and scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Patrick Biondi. Rios walked one and struck out two. Reliever Jose Fernandez followed with two scoreless innings which included five strikeouts.

Matt Oberste and L. J. Mazzilli added RBI doubles for the Rumble Ponies in the top of the eighth. Corey Oswalt (0-1) took the loss (4.0 IP, 4 ER, 7 K).
