MANCHESTER, NH – Officer Paul Rondeau of Manchester Police Department’s two-horse mounted unit, has put out a plea for help, after his trusty steed Valor, one of two horses who patrol the city streets daily, suffered a ruptured cornea and had to have his eye removed.
Rondeau explains that because the city’s Mounted Patrol is a non-profit and relies on donations and other funding streams, they are seeking some support from the public through a GoFundMe page. Within just a few hours the $3,000 fundraising goal had almost been met.
The best news is that Valor is expected to make a full recovery, and return to his street detail.
You can read Rondeau’s message below.
Wishing Valor a speedy recovery. We’re wonder if he’ll be sporting a cool eye patch when he returns to active duty.
“It’s been a rough few days in the Mounted Patrol. Last week, on October 19th, we arrived at the barn and noticed Valor’s eye was discolored. After a visit from our vet we were quickly on the road to the Myhre Equine Clinic in Rochester NH. Once we arrived it was determined that Valor had suffered a corneal rupture and unfortunately would lose his eye. Dr. Myhre and staff did an amazing job of removing Valor’s eye and caring for him afterwards. Valor is currently recovering at the clinic but will be home very soon. Unfortunately the surgery and board was expensive, which has severely depleted our budget. As a non-profit, we must raise our own money for everything horse related. Vet bills, hay, shoes and equipment are all our responsibility. We rarely ask for any help, but even a few dollars would help defray some of the cost of Valor’s surgery. We are told he will be able to return to work, patrolling the streets of Manchester which is what he loves. Hopefully you can help, every little amount makes a difference!!!”
