MANCHESTER, NH  — A crew from the city Parks and Recreation Department were out and about Friday giving the stately monument at Wagner Park a much-needed cleaning.

It is a preliminary step in the $300,000 renovation effort, set to start in earnest next spring, said city Parks Director Don Pinard.

“It hasn’t been cleaned in several years,” said Pinard, of the ornate monument which is a centerpiece of the park, also known as Pretty Park.

The park was hit by vandals last summer, which rallied neighbors to become more vigilant.

In July, a $300,000 donation from the Edward Wagner and George Hosser Scholarship Fund was announced to be used to finance the park rehabilitation efforts.

Other improvements will include replacement plantings starting behind the iconic domed memorial, new walkways, and upgrades to the lighting and irrigation systems.
