MANCHESTER, NH – The Cincinnati Cyclones bounced back from a lackluster performance Friday night to beat the Manchester Monarchs, 4-2, Saturday night at SNHU Arena.

The Monarchs (3-2-0-1) and Cyclones (2-4-0-0) will play the rubber game of their three-game series tomorrow to finish out the season series.

Cincinnati struck first when Shawn O’Donnell scored his 2nd goal of the season at 10:41 of the first period. O’Donnell handled a pass off the boards while streaking toward the crease and buried his shot behind Monarchs goaltender, Colin Stevens, to put the Cyclones up, 1-0.

The Cyclones would add another goal at 11:21 of the opening period when Jordan Sims netted a shorthanded goal on a breakaway. Sims chipped the puck past David Kolomatis in the Monarchs offensive zone, skated in all alone on goal and then sent a snap-shot through the five-hole of Stevens to make the game, 2-0.

Andrew Yogan added to the Cyclones lead when he scored his 1st goal of the season at 13:44 of the opening period, driving the puck home off the post on a hard shot from the left slot to put Cincinnati up, 3-0, heading into intermission.

The Monarchs got on the board when Joey Diamond scored for the second consecutive night, his 2nd goal of the season, at 3:14 into the second period. After receiving a cross-ice pass from Cory Ward, Diamond buried his shot on the doorstep under the pads of Cyclones goaltender, Mark Visentin, making the score, 3-1

Cory Ward brought the Monarchs to within one when he netted his 3rd goal of the season at 10:52. Ward collected a rebound off of Visentin and stuffed the puck home to make the score, 3-2.

The Cyclones wouldn’t let the Monarchs claw back to even when O’Donnell tallied his 2nd goal of the evening at 13:21of the middle frame. O’Donnell sent the puck on Stevens from a sharp angle, slipping the puck between Stevens’ pads and the post.

The Monarchs made a serious attempt to bring the game closer in the third period, but several late penalties prevented Manchester from mounting a comeback in the waning moments of the third period.

The Monarchs and Cyclones finish their three-game series Sunday, Oct. 30 (3 p.m.), at SNHU Arena.

NOTES

  • Monarchs allowed their first shorthanded goal of the season
