MANCHESTER, NH – A mother is charged with stabbing her son following an argument over his pet birds.
Officer Ryan Hardy was working a security detail Oct. 25 at the Elliot Hospital when an 18-year old male stabbing victim entered the Emergency department with a single stab wound to his back. The man stated he engaged in a heated argument with his mother, Bernadette Alvarez, 40, of Manchester, in the early morning hours.
The victim stated he and his mother began arguing at approximately 8:30 a.m. inside of their Belmont Street apartment. His two pet birds had been the subject of a contentious debate because she allegedly told him she was getting rid of them. He stated his mother woke him up and started to argue with him about his birds as he remained inside of his bedroom. Next, he allegedly walked into the kitchen area and continued to argue about his pets.
At some point in the argument, Alvarez allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed her son in the back. The injury caused a serious but non-life-threatening puncture wound to his upper shoulder. He was treated at the hospital while additional officers responded to the Belmont Street apartment. They spoke with Alvarez on scene and developed probable cause to arrest and charge her with First Degree Assault. They also located a knife on scene and based on the fact the knife had been wiped clean, she was also charged with falsifying physical evidence.
Alvarez will appear in the 9th Circuit Court-Manchester on October 26, 2015.
