MANCHESTER, NH – Six months after her husband was sentenced to serve 15 years in prison for child endangerment, a Hillsborough County Superior judge sentenced his wife, Samantha Grenier, to the same punishment.
On Oct. 3 Judge Gillian Abramson sentenced Samantha Grenier, the mother of two children, then ages 2 and 4, found living in filthy conditions inside their Quinn Street apartment last November, to serve 15 years in prison.
Manchester officers arrived at the residence to check the welfare of Grenier’s husband, James Grenier, on November 21, 2016. However, officers quickly realized something was amiss, and asked to enter the apartment to check the condition of the children. They found the children living in squalor, the older child harnessed to a bed covered in human feces, and the 2-year-old naked and cowering in a crib, also covered in feces.
Police Chief Nick Willard previously said that the investigating officers were profoundly disturbed by what they encountered inside the apartment – “and they’ve seen a lot,” he said.
On Tuesday, Samantha Grenier told the court she was “stressed out” and pleaded for help, according to a report by WMUR. Judge Abramson told Grenier that she was not the victim in this case.
On Wednesday, Manchester Police Capt. Ryan Grant reported the sentencing during the monthly Manchester Police Commissioners meeting, adding that it was one of the worst cases of child neglect the city’s seen, and that it was “good to know they were both held accountable.”
