MANCHESTER, NH — It was a day of giving around the city, as police and fire fighters were dispatched to distribute gifts and food to families in need.

Manchester Fire Fighters annual Adopt-A-Family program is a 30-year tradition that has, over the years, assisted 500 children on the receiving end of gifts purchased with money contributed by current and retired fire personnel.

Using lists of families identified by various city departments, Manchester fire fighters shopped for and wrapped gifts and toys, which were  loaded on a trailer for an early Christmas drop-off.

At each stop along the way firefighters received some hugs, thank-yous and cards, evoking  smiles, and tears from many of the receiving families who appreciated the help. Money raised was also used to provide food for Christmas dinners.
Families were “adopted” by employees from City Clerk’s office, Tax Office, Info Systems, and the Library. In all, 20

children from seven families will have a Merry Christmas thanks to the generosity of city employees, and Manchester Firefighters’ annual good will effort.
