MANCHESTER, NH – Officers responded to the area of South Taylor Street and South Belmont Street on Oct. 21 at about 9:30 a.m. for report of a dog owner having to shoot a pit bull that was attacking his dog on his porch. Richard D’Amour was walking his 5 year old lab mix, named Molly through his neighborhood. He observed two loose and aggressive pit bulls ahead of him. He turned toward his home and began to run with his dog. The two pit bulls gave chase after D’Amour and his dog. A passerby who had witnessed this incident attempted to turn his vehicle in the path of the dogs to slow them but was unsuccessful. D’Amour made it to his rear porch when the larger pit bull identified as “Luigi” attacked and latched onto the side of Molly’s face.

D’Amour and the passerby attempted to separate the two dogs, but were unable. D’Amour drew a pistol that he is licensed to possess and discharged one round into the pit bull’s upper torso, killing him. No injuries from the firearm discharge were reported and independent witnesses confirmed D’Amour’s account.

The lab mix suffered some puncture wounds but is expected to be fine. The lab owner suffered a some small bites on his hands. All the dogs were current with their vaccinations.

The second pit bull did not become involved in the incident and returned to his residence. The pit bull’s owner Adam Philbert arrived and was cooperative with the investigation. He had current vaccination records for both of his dogs and related that the dogs had gotten out and he was attempting to locate them when this occurred.

The deceased dog was returned to his owner.

The Manchester Police Department’s Animal Control Division will conduct a follow up to determine if any further action will be taken. The information in this press release will not be updated until Monday unless more pertinent details are released.
