MANCHESTER, NH – A city man who suffered traumatic injuries Monday afternoon in a freak accident on Cohas Avenue has died.

According to Manchester Police, officers responded to a single-vehicle crash on July 30, 2018, at approximately 2 p.m. They found  that Heath Lear, 49, of Manchester, had been driving north on Cohas Avenue when his moped-style scooter crashed due to a low-hanging wire. The wire was connected to a telephone pole and ran across the street, toward 739 Cohas Ave., when according to police the wire allegedly came down in the roadway as Mr. Lear became entangled in it.

The wire wrapped around Mr. Lear and his motor scooter, which caused life-threatening injuries to his head and shoulder, police said. He was immediately transported to Elliot Hospital where he underwent surgery, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries Wednesday night.

The Manchester Police Traffic Unit is investigating the crash to determine how the wire came down from the pole. No further information was available from police as to the kind of wire, whether it was electrified, and how it came to be extended across the roadway. All of that is part of the ongoing investigation, according to Lt. Brian O’Keefe.

If anyone has any information regarding the crash, please contact the Manchester Police Traffic Unit at 603-668-8711, reference Case # 18-11533.
