MANCHESTER, NH — Zachary Sweeney, 25, of Manchester, was arrested Jan. 12, charged with prowling, after police say he was caught checking for unlocked cars and houses on Jane Street.

screen-shot-2017-01-12-at-8-54-03-amOfficer Erik Slocum responded to the area of 53 Jane St. at 4: 30 a.m. Thursday for a report of a man seen checking house and car doors. The officer located a man matching the original description standing at the corner of Jane and Nashua streets, later identified as Sweeney,  standing next to a white Ford Focus visibly agitated.

Officer Slocum spoke with Sweeney, who claimed to have been locked out of his brother’s car, so he kicked the car several times causing two dents and several hundred dollars in damage. The officer realized that information was fabricated, and that the car did not belong to Sweeney’s brother, so he tracked down the rightful owner, a woman, who told police she did not know Sweeney, and claimed her vehicle was not damaged when she parked it the previous night.

Officers also made contact with the original caller who stated Sweeney had knocked on her front door. He walked away as she woke up but she noticed him outside of her home attempting to open her car door.

Sweeney was arrested and charged with prowling and criminal mischief based on the information provided by the two women the officers spoke with. Sweeney is scheduled to appear in the 9th Circuit Court-Manchester on January 12, 2016.
