MANCHESTER, NH – A collaborative celebration will be held Dec. 30 to highlight the 5th Principle of Kwanzaa, known as Nia (purpose). The event will take place from 12-3 p.m. at the Brookside Congregational Church, 2013 Elm St.

Kwanzaa, which means “first fruit” in Swahili, is historically an African-American tradition practiced in the United States and other regions of African Diaspora. Kwanzaa is observed annually from December 26-January 1. The origin of this observance started in 1966 as a means for the African American communities to reaffirm their cultural and historic beliefs. Kwanzaa has 7 governing principles: Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity) & Imani (Faith). The activities at the event will include an explanation of Kwanzaa, celebration of Kwanzaa which includes lighting of the seven candles, a Karamu (feast) and an African Market in support of Cooperative Economics. A raffle will be held for a 40-inch flat screen TV. The proceeds of the raffle will support the 2018 “We Are One” Festival.

If you are interested in supporting the “We Are One” Festival but are unable to attend the December 30 event, on the 4th day of Kwanzaa (Cooperative Economics) December 29th, 2017, raffles tickets for the television set will also be sold at the following locations from 12 p.m.-1:30 p.m.: Don Quijote 362 Union Street; Rainbow Beauty Enterprises, 489 Maple Street, Manchester; and Robesteurs Unisex Salon, 86 South Commercial St., Manchester.
