Hawks take four wins across two sports on Saturday

It’s Sunday, November 24, 2019. Here’s some of what’s been going on lately in Saint Anselm College sports.

Men’s Basketball

A buzzer-beater was needed to help Saint Anselm push Franklin Pierce into overtime, where they eventually would earn a 100-94 victory on Saturday.

That three-point final second score came from junior Chris Paul (Highland Mills, N.Y.), a highlight of a night where he scored 26 points alongside a career-high 18 rebounds.

Freshman Tyler Arbuckle (Bristol, Conn.) had 26 points as well, pulling down four rebounds, with sophomore Joey Belli (Wayne, N.J.) shattering his career-high mark for points with 18 to his credit alongside a team-leading four steals.

Now with a 4-1 overall record and 2-0 in conference, the Hawks take on Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 7:30 p.m.

Women’s Basketball

The Hawks remained undefeated with a 75-88 victory at home on Saturday night over Franklin Pierce.

Saint Anselm was a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line, not missing a free throw for the first time since a 12-for-12 performance against Saint Michael’s on Feb. 23, 2013.

Junior Peyton Steinman (Pittsfield, Mass.) had seven of those free throws, ending with 18 points. Senior Shannon Ryan (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) added 23 rebounds and 12 points.

Senior Sara Messler (Durham, N.H.) contributed with her third career double-double, notching 17 points with 10 rebounds. She now has over 400 rebounds in her career. Junior Grace Guachione (Pittsfield, Mass.) had 11 points with four assists

Saint Anselm (4-0, 2-0 Northeast-10) now takes on Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 7:30 p.m.

Men’s Ice Hockey

A third period comeback was necessary on Saturday night as the Hawks defeated Post, 3-2.

Junior Matt Chisholm (Scituate, Mass.) got the game-winner on a late power play, following earlier Hawks’ goals from junior John Femia (Canton, Mass.) and freshman Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.)

The Hawks (4-3-1, 3-1-1 Northeast-10) will travel to UMass Dartmouth on Monday, Nov. 25 at 7:20 p.m. before hosting six straight games at Sullivan Arena.

Women’s Ice Hockey

The women also needed third-period goals with no scoring over the first two periods in their 3-0 victory over Saint Michael’s on Saturday.

Senior Katy Meehan (Quincy, Mass.) found a power-play goal, with sophomore Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) and sophomore Kendra Currier (Middleton, Mass.) also adding goals.

The Hawks (9-3, 8-3 New England Women’s Hockey Association) now travel to Wesleyan (Conn.) on Friday, Dec. 6 for a 7 p.m. matchup.
