It’s Sept. 18, 2017, here are this week’s highlights from Manchester’s high school athletic programs.
Central
It remains to be seen if the Little Green can hang with Division I’s football juggernauts, but Friday’s performance against Spaulding made the case that at least their offense is top notch.
Central put 72 points up against the Red Raiders, putting them at 2-1, now tied with defending champion Bedford and just a game behind Goffstown in the North Conference standings.
The boys’ soccer team also had a good week, remaining undefeated after a pair of wins against Nashua North and a 1-0 victory against Pinkerton.
Memorial
While it’s unclear whether Central can be considered within the top echelon of Division I football this season, it’s clear that the Crusaders will be one of the weaker teams among New Hampshire’s larger schools.
Memorial fell to 0-3 after a 31-6 road loss to Portsmouth on Friday, echoing the week by their classmates on other varsity teams.
Only a 2-1 boys’ soccer victory over Keene on Friday and a five stroke golf victory against Merrimack a day earlier prevented a completely winless week among all Memorial varsity squads.
West
The Blue Knights football program, like Memorial’s, also continues to struggle.
They’re now dead last in the South Conference of Division II after a 39-8 defeat against Sanborn.
That makes them 0-3 on the year so far, joining Gilford as the only other team in Division II without a win so far.
Trinity
Trinity recorded a straight set victory in girls’ volleyball against Stevens in Claremont on Friday, preventing them from joining Memorial in a winless week at the varsity level.
The boys’ soccer team and the girls’ soccer team each lost to their counterparts at Souhegan and Hollis-Brookline, with girls’ soccer also recording a scoreless draw against Sanborn on Tuesday.
Derryfield
In contrast to Trinity and Memorial, Manchester’s smallest high school almost went undefeated over the past week throughout its varsity squads.
Only the girls’ soccer team, which lost 4-0 to Campbell and had a Friday contest against Somersworth postponed, could not grab a victory this week.
The week continued a string of excellence so far for the boys’ golf team and the boys’ soccer team, both of which remained undefeated.
Within Division III boys’ soccer, Derryfield remains tied at the top with Hopkinton at 6-0, with those two teams meeting in Manchester on Sept. 26.
