CONCORD, NH – “Fugitive of the Week” Billy Damuel Maldonado Cancel, 23, was arrested Oct. 14 by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force in New Britain, CT.  Maldonado Cancel was wanted on an outstanding Manchester Police Department arrest warrant charging him with 2nd degree murder in the Sept. 14 shooting death of 25-year-old Jonathan Vazquez-Ojeda.

On September 14, 2016, Maldonado Cancel is alleged to have been involved in an altercation at the intersection of Merrimack and Beech streets in Manchester during which Maldonado Cancel allegedly shot Jonathan Vazquez-Ojeda, resulting in his death. Shortly after the issuance of the arrest warrant for Maldonado Cancel, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force was requested to assist in the investigation along with several other agencies.

It was through a cooperative investigation that it was determined that Maldonado Cancel was in hiding in New Britain, CT.  This morning, members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Forces from both CT and NH, along with Homeland Security Investigations and officers from the New Britain Police Department were able to safely take Maldonado Cancel into custody.

Maldonado Cancel has been charged as a fugitive from justice by the New Britain Police Department and is currently being held in custody pending his eventual return to New Hampshire to face these serious charges.

Since the inception of the New Hampshire Joint Fugitive Task Force in 2002, these partnerships have resulted in over 6,340 arrests (Updated as of 05/03/2016).These arrests have ranged in seriousness from murder, assault, unregistered sex offenders, probation and parole violations and numerous other serious offenses. Nationally the United States Marshals Service fugitive programs are carried out with local law enforcement in 94 district offices, 85 local fugitive task forces, 7 regional task forces, as well as a growing network of offices in foreign countries.
