MERRIMACK, NH –State Police have identified the driver who died in the Aug. 20 BMW crash at the Merrimack tolls as John McDonough, 27, of Merrimack, who was killed after his 2006 BMW struck the Exit 11 toll booth.

Initial investigation points to excessive speed as a contributing factor to the crash.

Motorists had reported seeing McDonough’s vehicle driving erratically as he headed south on the Everett Turnpike in Bedford at about 1:13 p.m. Police said he caused a minor accident with a pick-up truck before narrowly missing a motorcyclist and a large dump truck.

McDonough continued driving south and nearly struck a State Police cruiser at a construction site just North of exit 11 before exiting the Turnpike at exit 11 and hitting the toll booth.

The Trooper on the detail was not injured and responded immediately after the vehicle had crashed and burst into flames.

State Police believe speed was a contributing factor in this collision, but continue to investigate.

Any information in regards to this incident, contact Trooper Mark Dore at the State Police Barracks Troop B in Bedford at 603-672-3333.
