DERRY, NH – On June 8, 2017 at approximately 10:40 p.m. the Derry Police Department responded to Walmart on Ashleigh Drive to investigate an abandoned animal report. Staff at the store reported that someone had placed a cat inside a cardboard box and left it abandoned in a shopping cart in the vestibule of the store.

Officers viewed video recorded by the store surveillance cameras. The video showed a dark sedan pull into a handicap parking spot in front of the store at about 10:30 p.m. A middle-aged woman with reddish hair is observed getting out of the car and walking into the store vestibule where she retrieves a shopping cart and returns to the car. She removes a cardboard box from the car, places it into the shopping cart then pushes the cart back into the store vestibule. She then exits the store leaving the box behind, returns to the car and it drives away.

The driver of the car does not get out but waits and picks the woman up as she leaves the store. A few minutes after the car drove away from the store an employee discovered the box with the cat inside. The animal appeared to be malnourished and poorly groomed. Due to its condition the cat was taken to an emergency veterinarian. The animal was determined to be in such poor health that it needed to be humanely euthanized.

Derry police are investigating this incident as Animal Cruelty. Police are asking anyone who recognizes the woman or the car, or has information regarding this incident, to contact Derry police at 603-432-6111.
