Neighbors on Kennard Street were in temporary lockdown Wednesday night as a haz-mat team examined the contents of the trunk of a car involved in a crash, following a high-speed police chase.

The chase ended where it began, in Manchester, after the cobalt blue Ford Fiesta with Florida plates crashed into another vehicle on Kennard Street, while eluding police.

State Police Trooper Bryan Trask explained police cleared bystanders from the sidewalks and wrapped the area in yellow crime tape, after a police officer smelled ammonia when he opened the trunk of the Ford.

“There is suspicion of one-pot methamphetamine ingredients,” said Trask at about 7:30 p.m. He was one of dozens of police and fire officials on the scene at the intersection of Mammoth Road and Kennard Street.

Trask said Manchester Police began pursuing the Ford Fiesta on 293 South, but stopped the pursuit. That is when a State Police trooper spotted the vehicle driving in the breakdown lane of 93 south at a high rate of speed, and followed the vehicle off the Exit 5 ramp and onto Route 28 North.

At that point, more than a dozen police cars joined the chase, some trying to head off the vehicle as it made its way back into Manchester from Londonderry along Mammoth Road at about 6:15 p.m., reaching top speed of about 62 mph, Trask said.

The crash happened on Kennard Street, east of Mammoth Road.

The car made a right turn onto Kennard Street from Mammoth and crashed into a silver car. Three people inside the blue car fled on foot. Two, a male and female, were quickly taken into custody by police, while the third person ran across Mammoth Road and west on Kennard Street, where he was taken into custody a short time later.

There were no serious injuries, Trask said.

He said the driver of the Ford faces multiple charges from multiple law enforcement agencies for the chase, and possibly more depending on the outcome of the search of the vehicle.

That information would be available once police processed the three at headquarters, according to the Manchester Police shift supervisor.

“It could have been more serious. Anytime you get into a pursuit, it’s serious,” Trask said.
