MANCHESTER, NH – For those wondering how inmate Kevin Gearhart managed to be on the loose and attempt to steal a few cars before he was recaptured Thursday, it appears corrections officers lost track of him while loading prisoners into a transport van.

According to an update by WBZ-TV-Boston, Kevin Gearhart, 50, was ordered held on $15,000 bail July 29 after his arraignment on several charges via Skype from the Hillsborough County House of Corrections.

Court documents reveal that corrections officers were loading nine prisoners into a van July 28 when they say Gearhart got away by hiding behind a handicapped-accessible elevator inside the loading area. Gearhart waited for the van to leave then made his escape through the open door.

Gearhart was  in custody for allegedly stealing a truck on July 18.

During Friday’s arraignment, Gearhart asked for lower bail than the $15,000 that was ordered, saying he has a drug problem and needs help.
