CMC’s New England Heart & Vascular Institute (NEHVI) received a Specialty Excellence Award for coronary intervention procedures, placing that specialty among the top 10 percent in the nation.  NEHVI also earned 5-stars from Healthgrades for coronary bypass surgery for 2018 and 2019, as well as for coronary intervention for 2019.  A 5-star rating indicates CMC’s clinical outcomes for these procedures are statistically significantly better than expected.

CMC is the only hospital in New Hampshire to earn these recognitions this year.  The achievement is featured in Healthgrades 2019 Report to the Nation, which finds that clinical performance continues to vary dramatically between hospitals regionally and nationally.  Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 facilities for 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.

“Everyone here at CMC dedicates themselves to excellence everyday, which has helped NEHVI become a premier cardiac program,” said Dr. Louis Fink, executive medical director of the New England Heart & Vascular Institute. “These Healthgrades recognitions are truly an honor, not only for our cardiothoracic surgeons and interventionalists, but also for the nurses, technicians, support staff and so many others throughout the hospital who support them.”

“With so many choices for care, consumers often find that their health journey can be difficult to navigate,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Healthgrades. “Information about hospital quality is helpful as they make decisions for their health, and Catholic Medical Center has distinguished itself as an exceptional organization for coronary intervention procedures.  Their 5-star ratings further showcase CMC’s expertise and commitment to patients.”

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for almost 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluated comparative outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states and the District of Columbia. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
