MANCHESTER, NH Safe Station and Serenity Place are back to normal operations after a temporary evacuation of the building where the program is housed due to elevated chemical fumes.

As of Tuesday morning, Safe Station HQ, located at 351 Chestnut St., was “back in business,” according to Serenity Place Financial Director Jamie Hill.

“We’re back to business as usual. We opened our in-patient offices at 8:30 a.m., which is when we were given the ‘all clear’ to come back by the fire department,” said Hill.

A test of the air quality showed the elevated chemical levels detected on July 31 had completely dissipated.

The building was evacuated and operations were temporarily moved to another location after several people reported feeling dizzy on Monday. Safe Station operations were not interrupted, just adjusted, said Hill.

“We were in the process of canceling out-patient appointments because we were originally told that it would take longer, but we stopped making the calls after we got the word this morning that we could continue operations here,” Hill said.

The adjacent 1269 Cafe will remain closed Tuesday as food that was in the building had to be thrown away due to possible contamination from the chemical fumes. That means the regularly scheduled Tuesday free lunch ministry is canceled, Hill said.
