MANCHESTER, NH – Police Commission Chairman Scott Spradling officially introduced Charlie Sherman as the newest member of the board during the Jan. 4 monthly commissioners meeting held at Manchester Police Headquarters.

Sherman was appointed to the three-year term by Mayor Ted Gatsas following the resignation in November of Commissioner Mark Roy. He will serve alongside fellow commissioners Spradling, Eva Castillo-Turgeon and Steven Spain.

Sherman, a native of Chelsea, Mass., is best known to the public as an on-air personality during the 14 years he spent as Sports Director at WMUR-TV.  He also served as host of “The Charlie Sherman” radio program on WGIR for seven years before taking a post as a correspondent with NH1 News. Prior to his television career, Sherman was in the banking industry for 14 years.

However, Sherman says his main focus now is serving as Executive Director of New Horizons for New Hampshire, the state’s largest homeless shelter, soup kitchen and food pantry, a job that he says, much like police work, can lead to “burn out.”

“I’m winding down at New Horizons after six years. It’s the most worthwhile thing I’ve ever done in my life, but like your work, it burns you out and it’s getting close to that for me,” Sherman said to the gathering of police department unit captains on Wednesday, along with Chief Nick Willard and Assistant Chief  Carlo Capano. “I’ve had multiple careers in my life, and I like to say at this point I’m rounding third and heading for home.”
