The state is looking into building a 100-bed forensic psychiatric hospital to replace the prison unit and take the pressure off hospital emergency rooms where patients sometimes wait for weeks for a psychiatric bed. Unlike all other states, mentally ill people in New Hampshire who have been civilly committed to the state psychiatric hospital can be transferred to the State Prison for Men’s Secure Psychiatric Unit just a few miles away in Concord, even if they haven’t been charged with or convicted of a crime. They need only be deemed a danger to themselves or others to be transferred. READ MORE
