MANCHESTER, NH – Fred Marple will read from his new book, “Welcome to Frost Heaves,” at the Manchester Public Library on Oct. 13 at 7 pm. The book is a collection of semi-true tales, rumors, and outright lies from Frost Heaves, the most under-appreciated town in New Hampshire.
“I’ve been telling stories about Frost Heaves for some time,” says Marple. “So I decided to put all the stories together in a book as a way to make a little money without having to do any actual work.”
From town meeting to the town dump, Frost Heaves is every small New England town you have ever visited, and a few you probably don’t want to. “Welcome to Frost Heaves” includes such stories as the miracle of the runaway snowblower, the Christmas carolers who got lost in the woods, an aging school teacher who fights a futile battle against bad grammar on the town sign, what really happened at town meeting, and more.
“The chapters are short, and I tried not to use too many big words,” says Marple. “I also included some News Nuggets from the local paper at the end of each chapter so folks would know where the stories end and not get confused.”
The reading will begin at 7 p.m. on October 13 at the Manchester Library. Marple will read from his book and explain some of the intricacies of the publishing process. “Welcome to Frost Heaves” is published by Islandport Press of Yarmouth, Maine, an award-winning publisher dedicated to stories rooted in the essence and sensibilities of New England. “They publish some top-notch authors, but they decided to take a chance on my book anyway,” says Marple.
